New Terminal One at JFK to redefine air travel with opening in 2026

The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is set to redefine international travel with its scheduled opening in 2026.

This state-of-the-art terminal is a cornerstone of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s ambitious $19 billion redevelopment plan for JFK, aiming to elevate the airport to world-class standards.

Project Overview

The New Terminal One is being constructed on the sites of the current Terminal 1 and the former Terminals 2 and 3, anchoring the airport’s south side.

With a budget of $9.5 billion, this 2.4 million square foot terminal will become the largest at JFK upon completion.

The project is being executed through a public-private partnership, with private partners providing financing to cover the full cost of the terminal, while the Port Authority is responsible for building supporting road and utility infrastructure.

Design and Features

The terminal’s design emphasizes spaciousness and natural light, featuring ceilings up to 90 feet high and expansive areas bathed in daylight. The security screening area alone will be the size of an American football field, ensuring efficient passenger flow.

Upon completion, the terminal will house 23 gates, 22 of which are designed to accommodate widebody aircraft, facilitating increased long-haul flight capacity to and from New York.

Airline Partnerships

To date, 11 airlines have committed to operating from the New Terminal One, including Turkish Airlines, Air France, KLM, Etihad, LOT Polish Airlines, Korean Air, EVA Air, Air Serbia, SAS, Neos, and Philippine Airlines.

Additionally, Air China is collaborating to enhance the travel experience for Chinese visitors to New York.

The terminal is expected to attract more international carriers as its opening approaches.

The New Terminal One is investing in cutting-edge technology to provide a seamless experience from curb to gate.

This includes the implementation of biometric systems for efficient passenger processing and advanced airside technologies to minimize flight delays and operational inefficiencies. Such innovations are designed to enhance both security and convenience for travelers.

The project has committed to a 30% participation goal for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE), already achieving over $1.2 billion in contracts with MWBE firms.
